Some dates don’t need an explanation.
We remember where we were.
We remember who we were with.
We remember the feeling of watching something happen that none of us could fully understand.
And for many of us, that day changed the way we looked at our country, our families, our neighbors, and even our own lives.
Twenty-five years later, we still remember.
We remember the nearly 3,000 people who never made it home.
We remember the families who woke up that morning expecting an ordinary day and went to bed with a life they would never recognize again.
We remember the firefighters, police officers, first responders, and ordinary people who ran toward danger while others were trying to escape it.
We remember the passengers and crew of Flight 93 who faced unimaginable circumstances and showed extraordinary courage.
We remember the people who gave blood, opened their homes, answered phones, carried supplies, prayed, served, and simply showed up.
For a brief moment, many of the things that normally divided us seemed smaller.
We were neighbors.
We were Americans.
We were people who needed one another.
And we were reminded how quickly life can change.
Psalm 46:1 says:
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
That verse doesn’t promise that trouble won’t come.
It reminds us that when it does, God is present.
As we remember September 11, let’s not only remember the tragedy.
Let’s remember the courage.
Let’s remember the sacrifice.
Let’s remember the families.
Let’s remember the unity.
And let’s remember that the people sitting beside us today are not guaranteed tomorrow.
So call your dad.
Hug your wife.
Tell your kids you love them.
Thank a first responder.
Check on your neighbor.
Forgive someone you’ve been holding something against.
And don’t take another ordinary day for granted.
Twenty-five years later, we remember.
We honor those we lost.
We pray for the families who still carry that loss.
And we thank God for the people who showed courage when courage was desperately needed.
